Een mooie septembermaand bij Filmhuis Cavia leidt ons via mystieke en magische sferen langs complexe vrouwen en de invloed van huidskleur in het dagelijkse leven op Curaçao. En er is natuurlijk nog veel meer te zien: prachtig poëtische shorts tijdens The Screening Room op zondag, een meditatieve kunstdocumentaire en niet te vergeten: ook dit jaar weer een samenwerking met het TranScreen Film Festival!

NL De debuutfilm van Nieuw-Zeelandse regisseur en eerste (en tot nu toe enige!) vrouwelijke Palm d’Or-winnaar Jane Campion, bekend van The Piano en de recente serie Top of the Lake, gaat over de stille Kay en haar emotioneel instabiele zus Sweetie. De film bevat alles (en meer) van wat Campions latere werk zo geliefd zou maken: complexe vrouwelijke karakters, problematische familiebanden, een realistische weergave van de arbeidersklasse en vooral een mystieke en bijna magische atmosfeer.
EN Debut film by New-Zealand director and first (and until now only!) female winner of the Palm d’Or Jane Campion, who is known for The Piano and the recent tv-series Top of the Lake. The film tells the story of the quiet Kay and her emotionally unstable sister Sweetie. The film has everything (and more) of what would make Campion’s later work so beloved: complex female characters, problematic family ties, a realistic portrayal of the working class and above all a mystical and almost magical atmosphere.

Psychick Cinema presents: Lights from the Outer Moons: The Material History of Hipster Spirituality (1950-1990)
EN This month's event marks the official start of the Psychick year, and we will kick things off by exploring a range of visual artifacts taken from the hipster/occult/psychedelic underground that has fermented for the last six decades. Imagine: talismans, magical symbols, the I Ching, a barn animal worshiped as a Greek god, psychedelic tarot cards, a giant-middle finger, pulpy science fiction books, along with other esoteric ephemera.
The lecture of HHP PhD researcher Christian Greer will be accompanied by abundant visual material + beatnik poetry + merrymaking + short films.

Movies, often followed by Q&A, as part of the TranScreen Film Festival
NL TranScreen Filmfestival (13 t/m 17 september) is het grootste transgender filmfestival van Europa. Het biedt een platform voor films van en voor transgender personen. Ze vertonen dit jaar films in Kriterion en Cavia, daarnaast is er een kunstprogramma in samenwerking met het Amsterdam Museum, een programma in Nieuwland en zijn er twee feesten in Vrankrijk en Mezrab. Op zondag 17 september zijn er in Cavia twee documentaires te zien en zijn er twee blokken met een bonte verzameling korte films. Meer info→

NL De meditatieve documentaire van Sophie Fiennes over Duitse kunstenaar Anselm Kiefer richt zich voornamelijk op La Ribaute, een gigantische installatie/gesamtkunstwerk op een verlaten industrieterrein in Zuid-Frankrijk. Met een soundtrack van avant-garde componisten Jörg Widmann en György Ligeti worden de beelden van het post-apocalyptische landschap een ode aan de abstracte essentie van de mensheid.
EN This meditative documentary by Sophie Fiennes about German artist Anselm Kiefer is mainly focused on La Ribaute, an enormous art-installation/gesamtkunstwerk on an abandoned industrial area in the south of France. The Screening Room: Clive Holden
NL Clive Holden is een Canadese nieuwe media artiest, filmmaker en poëet. Zijn meest bekende gepubliceerde project tot op heden is de prijswinnende 'film poëzie' serie Trains of Winnipeg, een collectie van 14 korte films met daarin Holdens poëzie. Hij wordt hierin muzikaal bijgestaan door Christine Fellow, John K. Samson, Jason Tait, Steve Bates en Emily Goodden. Er worden deze avond negen korte films uit deze serie vertoond.
EN Clive Holden is a Canadian new media artist, filmmaker and poet. His best-known and publicized project to date is the award-winning "film poem" series Trains of Winnipeg, a collection of 14 short films featuring Holden's poetry with musical accompaniment by Christine Fellows, John K. Samson, Jason Tait, Steve Bates and Emily Goodden. This evening nine movies from this series will be shown.

The ultimate quotable stoner film (loosely) tells the story of laidback hero The Dude and his search for the burglars who peed on his rug.
