SPECIAL
Wheeler Winston Dixon: An American Dream and Other Films
Dixon was part of the New York underground experimental film scene in the 1960s, and has been making films steadily ever since. His complete film work is archived in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art. Dixon will present, live, in person, his videos American Dream, Look, Prison State, The Catastrophe Series, Real & Unreal and previously unscreened new video works. Dixon has had screenings at The Whitney Museum, Anthology Film Archives, The Museum of Modern Art, The BFI, The Millennium Film Workshop, The San Francisco Cinématheque, The New Arts Lab, The Collective for Living Cinema, The Kitchen, The Filmmakers Cinématheque, The Oberhausen Film Festival and at numerous galleries around the world.
"Though he’s best known today as a scholar (his book The Exploding Eye provides a who’s who of 1960s experimentalists), Dixon’s short films are themselves visual catalogs of underground techniques: snarky Bruce Conner-ish montage, psychoactive Conrad/Sharits flicker effects, and Mekasian home-movie diaries. The distinctive Dixon kick comes from witty edits to far-out music.” – Ed Halter, The Village Voice
