NL Nu de Europese verkiezingen eraan komen, en het debat over de legitimiteit en toekomst van de Unie aanzwelt, kijken we naar Oost-Europa. Toen Occident in 2002 in première ging, bevond Roemenië zich in het proces om lid te worden van de Europese Unie. Occident laat dit bijvoorbeeld zien door middel van het bezoek van een Belgische commissaris, die door schoolkinderen wordt ontvangen met het enige Engels liedje dat ze kennen, en die later een lezing geeft aan de lokale autoriteiten om ze eraan te herinneren dat racisme niet goed is. Maar dit is slechts één van de vele verhalen die het plot van de film zijn complexiteit geeft. Occident is vooral het liefdesverhaal van Luci en Sorina, twee gewone jonge mensen met precaire banen en woningen, wiens romance door en door getroffen wordt door de hedendaagse mobiliteit en de hoop die het westen geeft.

Cristian Mungiu is een van de meest gelauwerde Roemeense regisseurs. Zonder een humoristische toon op te geven is hij in deze film in staat geweest om de dilemma’s en onzekerheden van de vele Oost-Europeanen vast te leggen die zich tussen het onbegrijpelijke verleden en een ontwortelde kosmopolitische toekomst bevinden.

EN With the European elections approaching and the debate about the legitimacy and future of the Union looming, we turn our gaze towards Eastern Europe. Occident tells a story of love between Luci and Sorina, two normal young people with precarious job and living situations, whose romance is affected by the mobility of the present time and the hope put in the West. When Occident was premiered in 2002, Romania was in the process of joining the EU. And the film portrays this moment with, for example, the visit of a Belgian commissioner to see children in a school singing the only English song they know, and who later gives a lecture to the local authorities about the importance of not being racist. This is one of the many details that give the main narrative its complexity.

Cristian Mungiu is one of the most acclaimed Romanian directors. While maintaining a humorous tone, he succeeds splendidly in this film to capture the dilemmas and insecurities of many Eastern Europeans who find themselves between an incomprehensible past and the rootless future of cosmopolitanism.

Gerontophilia

NL De Canadese filmmaker Bruce LaBruce (Raspberry Reich, Otto) is een van de meest baanbrekende filmmakers van tegenwoordig. Hij begon met het maken van creatieve gay-porno, en zijn eerste speelfilm werd al door Kurt Cobain uitgeroepen tot zijn favoriete film. LaBruces voorliefde voor grensverleggende thema’s komt duidelijk naar voren in deze geweldige film, die gaat over een jonge man genaamd Lake met een vriendin Desiree, die zich aangetrokken voelt tot een oudere man in een geriatrische kliniek. Een controversiëel statement over de verschillende soorten liefde die er bestaan in deze wereld, ver weg van hippe en modieuze stereotypen van wat schoonheid is. De film is allerminst sensatiebelust, maar in plaats daarvan heel sympathiek.

Op vrijdag 3 mei zal de film ingeleid worden door Jeffrey van Cine Interzone, en zal de film Engelse ondertiteling bevatten. Op donderdag 9 mei vertonen we de film met Nederlandse ondertitels.

EN Canadian filmmaker Bruce LaBruce (Raspberry Reich, Otto) is one of the most ground-breaking filmmakers around these days. He started off making creative gay porn, and his first feature was already proclaimed by Kurt Cobain as his favorite movie. LaBruce's predilection for going places no one else would even imagine is evident in this amazing flick, which is about a young man named Lake with a girlfriend Desiree, who finds himself attracted to an elderly man in a geriatric clinic. A controversial statement about the different types of love that exist in this world, moving away from hip and fashionable stereotypes of what beauty is. The film is not sensationalist in the least... instead it is absolutely charming.

On Friday 3 May, the film will be introduced by Jeffrey of Cine Interzone, and the film will include English subtitles. On Thursday 9 May we will show the film with Dutch subtitles.

Themroc

Claude Faraldo | 1973 | Frankrijk | 110' | no words

NL Themroc is een onmisbare cultfilm die de ineenstorting van een al te restrictieve burgerlijke Franse samenleving weergeeft naar een samenleving die doet denken aan een moderne steentijd. De minimale dialoog in de film bestaat uit een verzonnen taal van onbegrijpelijk knorren. Themroc is een arbeider die een onderdrukt bestaan leidt met een zinloze baan. Hij wordt woedend nadat hij is ontslagen. Zijn vernietiging van zijn appartement zet een een golf van aanstekelijk anarchistisch gedrag in beweging. De film werd gemaakt met een duidelijke sympathie voor de toentertijd heersende sociale onrust in Frankrijk. Het is schaamteloos utopisch en kijkt willens en wetens voorbij aan de vele complexiteiten van een dergelijke overgang naar ‘vrijheid’, maar jongens toch, het is een hilarische en plezierige tocht. Hef je hoofd omhoog en huil naar de maan!

EN Themroc is a must-see cult film which depicts the breakdown of an overly restrictive bourgeois French society into something like paleolithic urbanism, or idealised anarchy. The minimal dialogue in the film is comprised of a language of fantastic grunts. Themroc himself is a blue collar worker living an oppressed existence with a meaningless job. He goes berserk after getting the sack, destroying his apartment and beginning a wave of contagious anarchist behaviour. It was made in clear sympathy with the social upheaval of the era in France. It’s shamelessly utopic, and willfully overlooks the many complexities of such a transition to ‘freedom’, but oh-boy is it a hilarious and riotous ride. It will leave you howling at the moon.

NL In Colombia is de film, net als alles in de culturele, politieke en sociale sfeer, gemarkeerd door geweld. Nieuwe technologische ontwikkelingen, en elke nieuwe generatie filmmakers, zorgen ervoor dat dit geweld op verschillende manieren vormgeven wordt. In de gekozen selectie korte films verbeelden hedendaagse jonge Colombianen hun eigen visie op dit geweld. In plaats van dat zij beelden als bewijsmateriaal gebruiken, creëren zij nieuwe beelden die hen in staat stellen de schimmen, ruïnes en de scheuren in een samenleving te laten zien die zij niet anders hebben gekend dan in conflict. For more than a century, changes in the technologies for the production of cinema and new generations of filmmakers have been transforming the depictions of violence in the country. This selection of short films presents a group of contemporary Colombian filmmakers that create narratives about violence in the country through personal stories. They put aside using images as proves, to create new ones that permit them to show the ghosts, ruins, and cracks of a society that they have only seen immersed in conflicts. More info→

The Pervert's Guide to Ideology

NL Filosoof Slavoj Zizek en filmmaker Sophie Fiennes werkten samen om de ideologieën te ontrafelen die begraven zijn in de klassieke cinema. Uniek aan de aanpak van de documentaire, en vaak met een hilarisch effect, is de speelse manier waarop Zizek zelf in de films verschijnt. Deze filmische voorbeelden worden gebruikt om hun blijvende rol te laten zien die deze collectieve fantasieën spelen bij het vormgeven van overtuigingen en praktijken in de samenleving in bredere zin. Welke fascistische politieke dimensies liggen bijvoorbeeld verborgen in The Sound of Music? Is het, in tegenstelling tot het letterlijke verhaal, eigenlijk een eerbetoon aan het fascistische denken? Taxichauffeur, Zabriskie Point, The Searchers, Batman, They Live, Titanic en propagandafilms uit nazi-Duitsland en Sovjet-Rusland staan allemaal in Zizek’s opwindende, provocerende en altijd vermakelijke kritische analyse.

EN Philosopher Slavoj Zizek and filmmaker Sophie Fiennes team up to uncover the ideologies buried within classic cinema. Unique to the documentary’s approach, and to often hilarious effect, is the playful way Zizek appears within the films themselves. These cinematic examples are used to show the continuing role that these collective fantasies play in shaping the beliefs and practices in society more broadly. For instance, what fascist political dimensions lie hidden in The Sound of Music? Is it, counter to its literal plot, actually a tribute to fascist thinking? Taxi Driver, Zabriskie Point, The Searchers, Batman, They Live, Titanic, and propaganda films from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia all feature in Zizek’s stimulating, provocative and always entertaining critical analysis.

Ana y Los Lobos (Anna and the Wolves)

NL Ana y Los Lobos verbeeldt een koortsachtig verblijf in een huis waar de Spaanse aristocratie en moreel verval vertoeven. Ana (Geraldine Chaplin) is een buitenlandse gouvernante die aangenomen wordt om in een huis in het Noorden van Madrid te komen werken. De drie broers José, Fernando en Juan, hun moeder, en hun kinderen vormen een microkosmos die de waarden van de Spaanse dictatuur vertegenwoordigen – namelijk religie, militaire mannelijkheid, seksuele onderdrukking en nostalgie. Ana is het exotisch element dat de zelfdestructie van deze sociale orde aanwakkert.

In de laatste jaren van het regime (1936-77) lukte het Carlos Saura de censuur te omzeilen en maakte een reeks films (Cría cuervos, El jardín de las delicias…) die de ondergang toonden van de traditionele familiestructuren, hun invloed op kinderen en de huichelarij van de politieke en ecclesiastische elite. Ana y Los Lobos is een historisch cruciale film met verwoestende kritiek. De spannende en geraffineerde beelden en de interpretatie van Geraldine zijn prachtig, het resultaat is moeilijk te vergeten.

EN Ana y Los Lobos is a feverish journey to a place where the Spanish aristocracy and its moral decay run rampant. Ana (Geraldine Chaplin) is a foreign governess hired to work in a house in the north of Madrid. The three brothers José, Fernando and Juan, their mother and the children are a microcosm of the values of the Spanish dictatorship (religion, military masculinity, sexual repression and nostalgia). Ana is the exotic element that prompts the self-destruction of this social order.

In the last years of the regime (1936-77), getting through the grooves of censorship, Carlos Saura made a series of films (Cría cuervos, El jardín de las delicias…) portraying the collapse of the traditional familiar structures, their influence on children and the hypocrisy of the political and ecclesiastical elite. Anne and the wolves is crucial because of the moment in which it was made and its scathing critique. The eeriness and sophistication of the images and Geraldine’s interpretation are stunning; the result is hard to forget.
