NL De voorbije winterslaap mag dan vreemd lang hebben geduurd, toch zullen we ook deze zomer weer onze liefde voor cinema in vol maanlicht vieren. Cavia’s MOONS zal op drie vrijdagen en drie zaterdagen van de maand juli op de binnenplaats van ons gebouw plaatsvinden. We presenteren een eclectische, zinderende en woeste verscheidenheid aan films die strekt van vernielende punk en illegale raves tot subtiele schoonheid en verborgen pareltjes. Zomerachtige liefdesverhalen, rebellie, tijdeloze ontmoetingen, en een bijzondere aandacht voor allerlei soorten muziek.
De entree voor alle evenementen is gratis, hoewel donaties zeer worden gewaardeerd.

EN The winter-sleep might have been strangely long, but this summer, as always, we will celebrate our love for cinema in full moonlight. Cavia’s MOONS will take place across the whole month of July on three Fridays and three Saturdays in our building’s courtyard. We will present an eclectic, vibrating, and savage array of films that run from punk destruction and illegal raves to remote beauties and little- known charms. Summery love-stories, rebelliousness, timeless encounters, and a special attention to all kinds of music.
The entrance for all the events is free but donations will be very much appreciated.

Jubilee

NL Jubilee – opgenomen tijdens de zomer van 1977 in Londen – wordt door velen beschouwd als de beste punkfilm die ooit gemaakt is. Elisabeth I reist 400 jaar door de tijd om de toekomst van haar glorievolle koninkrijk te aanschouwen, maar treft in plaats daarvan een apocalyptisch landschap vol vuiligheid, verval, losbandigheid en schreeuwerige muziek aan. De cast van Jubilee, die door Jarman op straat en tijdens optredens werd opgeduikeld, bestaat uit een onvergetelijk repertorium aan individuen. Hoewel nihilisme en destructie de boventoon blijven voeren, is er ook ruimte voor mensen zoals Crabs, die nog in de liefde geloven, of de megalomaan Impresario die in punk een ongehoord commercieel succes ziet. Jubilee is wild, hilarisch en compromisloos. De portrettering van een generatie die zichzelf, zonder daar zelf voor te hebben gekozen, aantrof aan de rand van een wereld zonder toekomst.
EN Filmed during the summer of 1977 in London, Jubilee is considered by many the best punk film ever made. Elisabeth I travels 400 years to see the future of her glorious kingdom and finds instead an apocalyptic landscape of dirt, decay, vice, and noisy music. The characters of Jubilee, who were casted by Jarman in streets and gigs, are an unforgettable repertoire of types. Although nihilism and destruction keep the dominant tone there is also space for those, like Crabs, who still believe in love, or the megalomaniac Impresario, who finds in punk an unheard-of commercial success. Jubilee is wild, hilarious and uncompromising. The portrayal of a generation that didn’t choose for, but found itself on the verge of a world without a future.

NL El Concursante dompelt ons onder in de verzengende stad Cartagena, waar zich een oneindige rij heeft gevormd in hoop op de bemachtiging van een van de tweeduizend snelkookpannen die een bekend bedrijf beloofd heeft weg te geven. De film weet, door zijn rijke diversiteit in personages, muziek en gewoontes, een snijdend humoristisch portret te creëren van armoede en ongelijkheid. Tevens de belangrijkste redenen voor de stakingen en protesten die zich de afgelopen maanden door het land hebben verspreid.
Vanaf 19.00 draaien DJ’s Mitze Apocalypse en Chucho Vinilo Colombiaanse plaatjes – van punk tot cumbia, reikend van de Caraïben tot aan de Andes.
De donaties van deze avond gaan naar Colombiaanse collectieven die gemeenschappen ondersteunen die tijdens de stakingen werden getroffen door extreem politie- en paramilitair geweld. In samenwerking met Cinema Colombiano.
EN El Concursante immerses us in the torrid city of Cartagena where a never-ending queue has been formed to claim one of the 2,000 pressure cookers that a famous brand has promised to give away. Through its rich diversity of characters, music, and customs the film creates a piercingly humorous portrait of inequality and poverty. The main reasons, moreover, why strikes and protests have spread through the country in the last months.
From 19:00, DJ’s Mitze Apocalypse and Chucho Vinilo will be spinning Colombian records - from punk to cumbia, hailing from the Caribbean to the Andes.
Donations of this evening will go to collectives in Colombia helping and working with communities affected by the police and paramilitary brutality that arose with the strike. In collaboration with Cinema Colombiano.

In On the Coast verkennen we een Turks kustdorpje waar de zon oogverblindend schittert tijdens ontmoetingen op het strand aan de Egeïsche Zee. Terwijl Wildwood, NJ vertelt over jonge mensen aan de Jersey Shore en hun vriendschappen, liefde en zorgeloze relaties. De gebeurtenissen vergaren zich rond achtbanen, diepe vriendschappen en de vrijheid van doelloos dagdieven in de hitte.
EN A Cavia night all about that sticky, summery feeling. In On the Coast, we explore a Turkish seaside town where the sun is glistening through beach-bound encounters on the Aegean Sea. Then, in Wildwood, NJ, stories of young people on the Jersey Shore capturing friendships, love and carefree entanglement. The events are orientated around rollercoasters, deep fried Oreos and the freedom of aimlessly doing the day away in the heat.

La Vida es Silbar (Life is to Whistle)

NL Drie verhalen over lot, lust en angsten kruisen elkaar in Havana. Elpidio heeft moeite om over het verlies van zijn moeder, genaamd Cuba, heen te komen, en wordt onderwijl verliefd op een Amerikaanse biologe. Mariana is even verzot op ballet als op seks, maar heeft een akkoord gesloten met god waarin ze haar kuisheid zweert in ruil voor een hoofdrol als Giselle. Wanneer ze de bloedmooie danser ontmoet die haar zal vergezellen, worden haar principes echter aan het wankelen gebracht. Julia krijgt een onstuitbare gaapbui van het luisteren naar een officiële toespraak en besluit haar levenslange seksuele frustraties te overwinnen. Toen de USSR viel, raakte Cuba, geblokkeerd door Westerse machten, in totale isolatie en zijn economie stortte in. Hoewel de film gemaakt is tijdens die harde jaren, toont het toch niet het drama dat men wellicht zou verwachten. In plaats daarvan viert het de magie en de wonderen die zich zelfs op de moeilijkste momenten nog voordoen, om ons te herinneren aan onverkende werkelijkheden.
EN Three stories of fate, lust and fears cross each other in Havana. Elpidio struggles to get over the loss of his mother, called Cuba, while falling in love with an American biologist. Mariana is equally infatuated with ballet and sex, but has made a bargain with god to exchange her chastity for the leading role of Giselle. When she meets the stunning dancer that will accompany her, her principles begin to collapse. And Julia gets a unstoppable fit of yawning after listening to an official discourse and decides to overcome her life-long sexual frustrations. When the USSR fell, Cuba became completely isolated, blocked by Western powers, and its economy collapsed. This film was made during those hard years but it is not the drama you may expect. It celebrates instead the magic and marvels that appear even in the worst moments to remind us of unexplored realities.

NL Een gestoorde, excentrische en melodramatische vertelling over de jacht op vrijheid, onbeantwoorde liefdes en muzikale carrières in het land van beloftes. De Oost-Berlijnse rock-’n-roll genderqueer diva Hedwig speelt een glansrol in haar eigen punk-burlesque levensverhaal dat draait om haar onvrijwillige geslachtsoperatie, haar Duitse verleden, en vooral om haar ex-vriend en ex- bandgenoot Tommy, die haar verliet – boos en ongedurig – en nu een succesvolle solo-muzikant is. De film volgt Hedwig en haar band, the Angry Inch, terwijl ze Tommy’s tour schaduwen, en onderwijl Hedwigs verleden en genderidentiteit worden verkend.
EN A twisted, eccentric and melodramatic tale of the pursuit of freedom, unrequited love and musical careers in the land of promises. East Berlin Rock n Roll genderqueer diva Hedwig performs her punk burlesque life story which orbits around her unwanted sex surgery, her German past, and foremost her ex-lover and ex-bandmate Tommy who left her –itching and angry– and is now a successful solo musician. The film follows Hedwig and her backing band, the Angry Inch, as they shadow Tommy's tour, while exploring Hedwig's past and her gender identity.

NL Sommige films zijn muzikale belevenissen, en het is in die geest dat we MOONS dit jaar willen afsluiten. Twee films over rebellie en visueel experiment, stampvol techno, lawaaiige punk, theremins, percussie, violen en psychedelische rock. We beginnen met Radio Voorwaarts dat het laatste feest in een kraakpand in Amsterdam verbeeldt dat, hoewel fictief, velen van ons bekend zal voorkomen. Vervolgens, in Lima Grita, begeven we ons op een betoverende reis door de hedendaagse muziekscene van Lima.
EN Some films are like musical experiences, and it is in that spirit that we will close MOONS this year. Two films of rebelliousness and visual experimentation that vibrate with techno, noisy punk, theremins, percussion, violins, and psychedelic rock. We will start with Radio Voorwaarts that depicts the last party of a squat in Amsterdam which, although fictional, will seem familiar to many of us. And then with Lima Grita we will embark on a mesmerizing journey through the contemporary music scene of Lima.
