Cinema Colombiano: Female focus II
NL Deze zesde editie van Cinema Colombiano staat in het teken van films gemaakt door vrouwen, transgenders en non-binaire mensen, die nieuwe perspectieven bieden op de sociale en politieke dynamiek van Colombia. Het is ook de eerste keer dat Cinema Colombiano een hele festivaldag in Amsterdam heeft. We presenteren twee speelfilms en twee korte films en een dj-set van Mitze Apocalipze y Chucho Vinilo. EN This sixth edition of Cinema Colombiano is focused on films made by women, transgender and non-binary people, who bring new perspectives about the social and political dynamics of Colombia. FESDA Film and Video Festival from the Aguablanca District in Cali, Colombia
NL Een selectie van korte films die vertoond zijn op Festival Nacional Cine y Video Comunitario del Distrito de Aguablanca (FESDA). Dit festival in Cali, Colombia is zogezegd een gemeenschapsontmoeting waar films een proces van zelfvertegenwoordiging zijn voor diezelfde helaas onderdrukte gemeenschappen. Het is de eerste keer dat deze grassroots films in Europa te zien zijn, als een manier om de boodschap van verzet ook hier bekender te maken.
De kaartopbrengst van deze dag komt ten goede aan het FESDA, voor hun editie van 2021.
EN Selection of short films screened at the Festival from the Aguablanca District in Cali, Colombia. This festival is a community encounter where films are self-representation processes that create dialogues and among people in local oppressed communities. For the first time these grassroots films will be seen in Europe, as a way to expand these conversations of resistance and subversion.
The entrance tickets of this day will be sent to FESDA, for the production of their 2021 edition.

NL De eerste liveactionfilm van Mike Judge, onder andere bekend van Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill en Silicon Valley, is losjes gebaseerd op zijn eigen korte animatiereeks Milton. De film, die eerst nog geen groot succes in de bioscopen was, maar binnen een paar jaar alsnog een cultklassieker werd, is een satire op het kantoorleven. Een groep dertigers is gebonden aan hun eigen cubicle (je weet wel: de vanuit Amerika zeer bekende indeling van kantoren, met van die wandjes) en worstelt met de onpersoonlijke bureaucratie en gang van zaken van een IT-bedrijf. De donkerkomische en absurde bijrollen zorgen voor een vrolijke noot wanneer de onderbuik van het kantoorleven in al zijn kleurloos saaie glorie wordt getoond. Volgens cultuurtheoreticus Mark Fisher ving geen film beter het gevoel van ‘Verelendung’ op de kapitalistische werkvloer.
EN Loosely based on Milton, one of the first animations by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill, Silicon Valley), this underappreciated office-based satire focusses on a group of cubicle-bound 30-somethings and their struggles with the impersonal bureaucracy of a run-of-the-mill IT firm. Dark wit and absurd support characters provide comedy relief while the soft underbelly of office politics is exposed in all it’s drab glory, and righteously ridiculed. Late cultural theorist Mark Fisher believed that no film “better captures the bureaucratic immiseration of late capitalist managerialism labour”.

NL Deze dystopische sciencefiction-komedie speelt 500 jaar in de toekomst. Een eenvoudige legerbibliothecaris wordt na een eeuwenlange kunstmatige slaap in het jaar 2505 wakker en ontdekt dat de commercialisering geëxplodeerd is en het anti-intellectualisme heerst. Rechtvaardigheid, mensenrechten en maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid zijn weggegooid door de als geheel achterlijke bevolking. Uitgebracht tijdens, en overduidelijk geïnspireerd op, het presidentschap van George W. Bush, hebben velen deze film een vooruitziende blik op ons neoliberale heden genoemd. Een heden waar onbeschofte miljardairs de wereld runnen, grote bedrijven hun stempel op elk aspect van het publieke en private leven drukken en gigantische entertainment-monopolies onze ideeën en gedachten proberen te beïnvloeden.
EN This dystopian sci-fi comedy is set 500 years in the future, where a simple US army librarian wakes up to find commercialism has exploded and anti-intellectualism prevails, while justice, human rights, and social responsibility have been squandered by it’s mindlessly hedonic populace. Released during and no doubt inspired by George Bush’s presidency, many have called this film prescient of our neoliberal present where crass billionaires run the world, corporations have their brand on every aspect of public and private life, and gargantuan entertainment monopolies try to record and influence our every thought.

EN Archival Screening Night Roadshow is a veritable treasure from the world's archives and archivists featuring more than twenty astonishing films and videos in 100 minutes. The centerpiece of every Association of Moving Image Archivists conference since 1991, the program highlights incredible, strange, astonishing, hilarious, and curious treasures from the world’s moving image archives. This cinematic Cabinet of Wonders features films from Mexico, Thailand, and New Zealand, an appearance by Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five, a dancing bobcat (it's not what you expect!), Baltimore breakdancing including the Chocolate Boogie, Jack Lemmon's first screening appearance as a helpless soldier, and many more.

NL Olga is kostuumontwerpster. Zes weken geleden heeft ze haar relatie beëindigd met Georg: filmregisseur, artiest, eikel. Nu zijn ze allebei ergens op een camping in Polen en proberen ze een komedie op te nemen. Het script is verschrikkelijk, de producer heeft ontslag genomen, de geluidsman is weggelopen en nu wil ook de hoofdrolspeler weg. Olga heeft het uitgemaakt met Georg omdat hij geen gezin wilde stichten. Maar dan, midden in de chaos op de set, barst de bom: Olga is zwanger. Wat begint als een Duits-Poolse film-in-filmkomedie ontwikkelt zich tot een relatiestudie die het allemaal heeft: regisseur Franz Müller stuurt zijn kleurrijke ensemble door de turbulentie van saamhorigheid en toont het niet kunnen plannen van de liefde.
EN Olga is a costume designer. Six weeks ago, she split up with Georg: film director, artist, dick head. Now they are both somewhere on a campsite in Poland, trying to shoot a comedy. The script is awful, the producer has resigned, the sound man has run away, and now the lead actor wants to go. Olga separated from Georg because he didn't want to start a family. But then, in the midst of the chaos on the set, the bomb bursts: Olga is pregnant. What begins as a German-Polish film-in-film comedy develops into a relationship study that has it all: director Franz Müller sends his colorful ensemble through the turbulence of togetherness and incidentally shows the unplannability of love.

The Birth of Resonance

NL We zijn verheugd te mogen melden dat producent Sunah Kim en editor Kijung Park bij de vertoning van The Birth of Resonance aanwezig zullen zijn. Na afloop van de vertoning gaan zij in gesprek over de film en bestaat er uiteraard de mogelijkheid om vragen aan hen te stellen.
In de film volgen we meester Seonbin Im, in Korea beter bekend als het immateriële culturele erfgoed nummer 30 van de provincie Gyeonggi-do. Samen met zijn zoon, die tevens zijn enige leerling is, zijn ze bezig met het maken van een traditionele Koreaanse trom. We zien ze aan het werk in een groot atelier op het platteland. Omringt door een groep katten zijn ze bezig met het delicate proces van het trekken en knippen van de trommelvellen, om deze vervolgens over de trommen te spannen. Vervolgens volgt het decoratieve schilderwerk, om te eindigen met het stemmen met behulp van achteruitgaande gehoor. De film toont ons zo niet alleen de leefwereld van de meester, maar richt zich ook op het oude culturele erfgoed, en de bescherming hiervan, binnen de hedendaagse Koreaanse samenleving. Dit komt vooral naar voren in de botsing tussen de verschillende waarden van beide generaties: de meester aan de ene kant, zijn zoon aan de andere. Traditioneel vakmanschap tegenover het winstoogmerk. En wat missen we eigenlijk in onze hightech digitale wereld?
EN We are very happy to screen The Birth of Resonance as well as having the pleasure to welcome producer Sunah Kim and editor Kijung Park in person at Cavia! After the screening they will do a short talk about the film and will be available to answer some of your questions.
The film closely follows master Seonbin Im, known in Korea as is Gyeonggi’s Intangible Cultural Asset No. 30, as well as his son, his only disciple, in the process of crafting a traditional Korean drum. They both work at a large atelier in the countryside which they share with a group of cats. We see the delicate process of pulling and cutting the skins of drums, nailing these to the drums, the following decorative paint work, and finally tuning the drum with the help of his ailing hearing. The film touches not only on the master's way of life, but focuses on cultural heritage and its preservation in contemporary Korea society. This finds expression in the collision of different values between the generations, the master on one hand and his son on the other, craftsmanship and the rise of capital while questioning what we miss in a high-tech digital world.

Asian Movie Night: Itaewon

NL Welkom bij de tweede samenwerking tussen Filmhuis Cavia en Asian Movie Night. Maandelijks vertonen we speciaal geselecteerde films uit het gehele Aziatische continent.
Deze keer vertonen we de Zuid-Koreaanse documentaire Itaewon van regisseur Ga-Ram Kangyu. De film vertelt het verhaal van drie vrouwen die in Itaewon wonen. Dit is al sinds jaar en dag Seouls meest multiculturele en daarom meest discriminerende wijk. Korea staat internationaal bekend als brenger van aangrijpende thrillers zoals Parasite en, meer recentelijk, Squid Game, de hitserie op Netflix. Deze film en serie gaan beide over armoede en onzekerheid onder het neoliberale kapitalisme. Ze creëren echter hun eigen gefabriceerde werelden en kijken weg van specifieke verwijzingen naar de Koreaanse cultuur. Om Koreaanse films te begrijpen, moeten we weten waar het voor het land karakteristieke geweld en de humor vandaan komt. Itaewon is geen fictie. Het is een wijk die ons toont hoe het Koreaanse oorlogstrauma persoonlijke geschiedenis verwaarloost door botweg voor een neo-imperalistische en kapitalistische wereld te kiezen. Deze film is een goede manier om het hedendaagse wereldwijde 'K-syndroom' in zijn context te plaatsen door te luisteren naar de verhalen van de lokale geluiden in Korea.
EN Welcome to the second collaborative instalment between Filmhuis Cavia and Asian Movie Night. On a monthly basis we screen selected films from various Asian countries.
This time we introduce the documentary film Itaewon directed by Ga-Ram Kangyu from South Korea. It shows the story of three women who have lived in Itaewon, the most multicultural and thus discriminatory neighbourhood in Seoul since the days the U.S. dollar ruled. Korea’s flair for creating compelling thrillers is internationally recognised for some time now, with successes such as Parasite and Netflix's recent hit show the Squid Game. Both deal with social precarity under the neoliberal capitalism. However, feature films like these move away from Koreas specific cultural references and create their own fabricated worlds. In order to understand Korea's characteristic films, we need to know where the infamous violence and humour come from. Itaewon is not a fiction. It is a neighbourhood that shows how Korea's post war trauma neglects personal histories by bluntly adopting neo-imperial refiguration and capitalism. This film is a good way to contextualise the current global K-syndrome by listening to the stories of local voices from Korea.
