NL Arturo is een tiener die speelt met de vrije geest van de jongere kinderen waarmee die omgaat in het dorp. Wanneer een gewelddadige situatie de ogenschijnlijk idyllische sfeer verstoort, met de suggestie van toxische machismo, neemt Arturo de moedige stap om gekleed als vrouw uit de kast te komen bij diens ouders.
Na afloop is er een Q&A met de filmmaker.
EN Arturo is a teenager who plays with the free spirit of the younger kids they hang around with in the village. When a violent situation disrupts the seemingly idyllic atmosphere, with its suggestion of corrosive machismo, Arturo bravely takes the bold step of coming out to their parents dressing as a woman.
There will be a Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening.

NL De in Berlijn gevestigde kunstenaars Anja Dornieden & Juan David González Monroy (ook bekend als OJOBOCA) presenteren hun speelfilm Her Name Was Europa. De film, opgenomen op 16 mm, volgt historische en hedendaagse pogingen om de Oeros, de uitgestorven wilde voorouder van het moderne vee, weer tot leven te brengen. De film wordt voorafgegaan door een nieuwe korte film op 35mm film, Enthusiasm. Beide films worden vertoond in hun originele formaten!!
EN Berlin-based artists Anja Dornieden & Juan David González Monroy (aka OJOBOCA) present their feature-length film Her Name Was Europa. Shot on 16mm, the film traces historical and contemporary attempts to breed back to life the Aurochs, the now extinct wild ancestor of modern cattle. The film will be preceded by a new short film on 35mm film, Enthusiasm. Both films will be shown in their original formats!!

NL De oeros is het eerste gedocumenteerde geval van het uitsterven van wilde dieren. De laatst bekende wilde oeros stierf in 1627 in het Jaktorów-bos in Polen. Zowel de jacht als de introductie van gedomesticeerd vee leidde tot zijn achteruitgang en verdwijning. De waarde ervan kwam echter niet alleen voort uit het feit dat het een bron van levensonderhoud was. Eigenschappen die aan het dier werden toegeschreven, zoals snelheid, kracht en moed, gaven het een grote symbolische kracht. Sommige van zijn lichaamsdelen werden toegeschreven met bovennatuurlijke krachten. De huid van het voorhoofd en een kruisvormig bot in het hart werden gewaardeerd om hun magische eigenschappen. Degenen die ze droegen, werden bezitters van de eigenschappen van het dier. In Her Name Was Europa onderzoeken de filmmakers de wetenschappelijke en Frankenstein-achtige pogingen om de soort nieuw leven in te blazen.
EN The aurochs is the first documented case of wildlife extinction. The last known wild aurochs died in the Jaktorów Forest in Poland in 1627. Both hunting and the introduction of domesticated cattle led to its decline and disappearance. Its value, however, derived not just from being a source of sustenance. Traits that were attributed to the animal, such as speed, strength and courage, imbued it with great symbolic power. Some of its body parts were ascribed with supernatural powers. The skin of the forehead and a cross-shaped bone inside the heart were prized for their magical properties. Those who carried them became possessors of the animal’s traits. In Her Name Was Europa the filmmakers explore the scientific and Frankenstein-like attempts made to revive the species.

EN In a nameless, drab office building, Soviet workers push paper, waste time and do everything to make their government as inefficient as possible. A bureaucrat has just been fired for his improper, wasteful working methods, and his wife (Bella Chernova) is furious at him. He quickly learns that he can procure a new job with help of a sponsor. As the bureaucrat and his doorman (E. Ovanov) discuss how to go about his search, his wife becomes increasingly unhinged.
With thanks to Georgian National Film Center and our very special guest Ketevan Kipiani, we will delve into the rich film history of the region during a short presentation prior to the screening.

NL "Ik was ongeveer zeven jaar oud toen iemand me voor het eerst op straat 'zwart' noemde. Ik draaide me om om te zien tegen wie ze het hadden, totdat ik me realiseerde dat ik het was. Die dag begreep ik dat ik zwart was, en het lachen dat het veroorzaakte door mensen in m'n buurt deed me denken dat het zijn van een zwart persoon niet zo geweldig was... Gebeurde dit alleen bij mij? Of gebeurde het ook bij andere zwarte vrouwen?" Negra laat de regisseur in haar zoektocht zien wat het betekent om als zwarte vrouw in Mexico te wonen. Het vertelt het verhaal van vijf afro-afstammelingen uit het zuiden van Mexico die racisme, verzet en processen van zelfacceptatie, strategieën om stereotypen te overstijgen en de viering van hun identiteit bloot te leggen. Na afloop zal er een Q&A met de filmmaker plaatsvinden.
EN "I was about seven years old the first time someone called me “black” on the street. I turned around to see who they were talking to, until I realized it was me. That day I understood I was black, and the laughter it caused among the people nearby made me think being a black person wasn’t that great... Was this only happening to me? Or did it happen to other black women?" Negra shows the director in her search of exploring what it means to inhabit Mexico as a black woman. It tells the story of five afro-descendant women from southern Mexico, exposing racism, resistance and processes of self-acceptance, strategies for transcending stereotypes, and the celebration of their identity. There will be a Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening.

NL Let the Summer Never Come Again is de eerste speelfilm van de Georgische filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze. De film werd in 2017 bekroond met de Grand Prize op FIDMarseille en heeft vele internationale festivals bezocht. Alexandre Koberidze gebruikt de mobiele telefoon van Sony Ericsson (W595) als belangrijkste hulpmiddel voor zijn film, die video opneemt met 15 frames per seconde met 3,15 megapixels en die de schoonheid van zogenaamde 'lage resolutiebeelden' biedt. Let the Summer Never Come Again is een eerbetoon aan de stille cinema met romanschrijvers en minimale vertelling. Het grootste deel van de film is gewijd aan het portret van het stadsleven in Tbilisi, Georgië, en de occasionele patronen van schoonheid die naar voren komen. De film duurt 3 uur en 22 minuten, dus we raden je aan om het jezelf gemakkelijk te maken, snacks mee te nemen en pauzes te nemen als dat nodig is!
Samen met onze zeer speciale gast, Ketevan Kipiani, duiken we voorafgaand aan de vertoning in de filmgeschiedenis (en toekomst!) van Tbilisi tijdens een korte presentatie.
EN Let the Summer Never Come Again is the first feature film by Georgian filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze. The film was awarded the Grand Prize at FIDMarseille in 2017 and has traveled through many international festivals. Alexandre Koberidze uses Sony Ericsson (W595) cellphone as a main tool for his film, which records video at 15 frames per second with 3.15 megapixels and provides the beauty of so-called "low resolution images". Let the Summer Never Come Again is a tribute to silent cinema with a novelisting storytelling and minimal narration. The biggest part of the film is devoted to the portrait of urban life in Tbilisi, Georgia, and the occasional patterns of beauty that emerge. The film runs for 3 hours 22 minutes, so we encourage you to make yourself comfortable, bring snacks, and take breaks if you need to!

Gevolgd door een Q&A gemodereerd door Dr. Hilla Dayan, docent aan het Amsterdam University College met Ellyott die de soundtrack van de film maakte en ook in Amsterdam woonde en de verhalen kan vertellen van de Amsterdamse punk/krakersscene uit de jaren 80. Na afloop zal Ellyott ons vervoeren met een dj-sessie om deze fantastische documentaire lichamelijk te kunnen verteren.

Vrije Ruimte Festival: Buurland - A land ruled by neighbors + Q&A

NL In Utrecht, verscholen in Tuinwijk, ligt een bijzondere wijk die door de bewoners is omgedoopt tot 'Buurland'. Al sinds 2007 zijn er plannen om deze portiekwoningen te slopen, maar door de economische recessie is dit lange tijd stopgezet. Hierdoor wonen sommige bewoners al meer dan tien jaar in Buurland en is er een bijzonder saamhorigheidsgevoel ontstaan. Gereedschap, soeplepels en tuinen worden gedeeld door buren. Een belangrijk ritueel voor de gemeenschap is het jaarlijkse wijkfestival 'Zwemfest', waarbij de achtertuinen veranderen in een professioneel ogend festivalterrein. Toch zullen in 2023 de huidige bewoners hun huizen moeten verlaten. Woningcorporatie Mitros is van plan een nieuwe wijk te creëren, genaamd: 'Nieuw Buurland'. Zal Mitros erin slagen dit gemeenschapsgevoel voort te zetten? TRAILER
Na afloop zal er een online Q&A plaatsvinden met filmmaker Malìn van Weerdenburg, die zelf ook in Buurland woont, gemodereerd door Ying-Tzu Lin.
Deze vertoning is deel van het Vrije Ruimte Festival. Op vrijdag 25 en zaterdag 26 november organiseert Amsterdam Alternative (waar wij ook deel van uit maken) voor het eerst dit festival. Door middel van dit festival willen we het belang en de - niet in geld uit te drukken - waarde van vrije ruimte onder de aandacht brengen. Het festival vindt plaats op meerdere ‘alternatieve’, niet-commerciële locaties in de stad met een programma van discussies, exposities, live bands, documentaires, eten, drinken, rondleidingen, audio-visuele experimenten en feestjes. Het Vrije Ruimte Festival is in samenwerking met de Envisioning Free Space conferentie, die in Amsterdam plaatsvindt dit jaar.
EN In Utrecht, hidden in Tuinwijk, lies a remarkable neighborhood that has been renamed 'Buurland' by its residents. There have been plans to demolish these portico houses since 2007, yet this has been halted for a long time due to the economic recession. As a result, some residents have lived in Buurland for more than ten years, and a special sense of community has emerged. Tools, soup spoons and gardens are being shared by neighbors. An important ritual for the community is the annual neighborhood festival 'Zwemfest', wherefore the backyards transform into a professional-looking festival site. Yet, in 2023, the current residents will have to leave their houses. Housing corporation Mitros plans to create a new community, called: 'Nieuw Buurland'. This screening is part of the Vrije Ruimte Festival. On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 November, Amsterdam Alternative (of which we are also part of) is organizing this festival for the first time. With this festival we want to draw attention to the importance and value of free space, which cannot be expressed in monetary terms. The festival takes place in multiple 'alternative', non-commercial venues in the city with a program of discussions, exhibitions, live bands, documentaries, food, drinks, tours, audio-visual experiments and parties. The Vrije Ruimte Festival is a cooperation with the Envisioning Free Space conference, which is taking place in Amsterdam this year.
