NL Peering into the Prism of Lyra is een kort filmisch portret van een jonge vrouw die gewijd is als hoge priesteres heks en yogini. Ze neemt ons mee op een reis in haar natuurlijke omgeving, de duinen van Schoorl, en voert een ritueel uit voor de elementen. Vervolgens deelt ze haar geheimen van magische manifestaties en verklaart haar connectie tot het Andromeda sterrenstelsel systeem, communicerend met haar sterrenfamilie door gebruik te maken van kristallen schedels. De titel is ontleend aan het cult boek The Prism of Lyra door Lyssa Royal-Holt, die de galactische nalatenschap verkent van sterrenzaden, die op Aarde incarneren met een oorsprong in verschillende sterrenstelsels.
De film wordt gevolgd door een geleide geluidsmeditatie door Aisha Zafirah, de vrouw uit de film.
We sluiten de avond af met een Q&A met regisseur en bedenker van het concept Maia Lyon Daw en Aisha Zafirah.
EN Peering into the Prism of Lyra is a short film portrait of a young woman who is an ordained high priestess witch and yogini. She takes us on a journey into her natural environment, the dunes of Schoorl, and performs a ritual to the elements. Further to this, she shares her secrets on manifestation magic and explains her connection to the Andromeda galaxy system, communicating with her star family there through the use of crystal skulls. The title is derived from the cult book The Prism of Lyra by Lyssa Royal-Holt, who explores the galactic heritage of starseeds, those incarnate on earth with origins in different star systems.
The film will be followed by a guided sound meditation by Aisha Zafirah, the woman from the film.
We will end the evening with a Q&A with director and creator of the concept Maia Lyon Daw and Aisha Zafirah.

NL Sinds ze de oorlog in Syrië ontvluchtten leeft de familie Suleyman verspreid over Europa. Lazgin woont met zijn gezin in Oekraïne, maar zijn broer Koshnhav is in Duitsland, terwijl een derde broer in Koerdisch Irak verblijft en een vierde is achtergebleven in Syrië. We volgen Lazgin’s zoon Andriy, die inmiddels vrijwilliger is bij het Rode Kruis en in Oekraïne opnieuw met een militair conflict te maken krijgt. De onontkoombare realiteit van oorlog achtervolgt hem, terwijl hij twijfelt of hij moet ontsnappen of weerstand moet bieden en het lijden ter plaatse moet helpen verlichten. Zijn familiebezoeken in oorlogsgebieden worden afgewisseld met beelden van militair machtsvertoon, humanitaire hulpacties, feestelijke bijeenkomsten en fragmenten uit het dagelijks leven.
EN After they fled the war in Syria, the Suleyman family was scattered across the world. Lazgin lives with his family in Ukraine, one of his brothers is in Germany, while a third is in Kurdish Iraq, and a fourth remains in Syria. We follow Lazgin’s son Andriy, who is now a volunteer with the Red Cross and dealing with yet another military conflict, this time in Ukraine. The inescapable reality of war chases him, as he is haunted by doubt whether to escape or resist and help alleviate the suffering on site. His family visits across warzones are interspersed with footage of humanitarian relief efforts, displays of military strength, festive gatherings, and slices of everyday life.
Divided into glitchy chapters, numbered One through Nine before resetting to Zero for the epilogue, which in Arabic stands for the circling nature of infinite, the viewers are made aware of the unstoppable, painful cycle of war and peace, where moments of joy are precious but short-lived.

NL Cavia is verheugd om de Duitse auteur Claudia von Alemann te verwelkomen in onze bioscoop voor dit uitzonderlijke weekend in april, waar twee van haar films te zien zijn uit een levenslang oeuvre gewijd aan politieke cinema in al zijn vormen. In dit uitzonderlijke document, opgenomen eind december 1967 tijdens de vierde editie van het EXPRMNTL-festival in Knokke-le-Zoute, legt Claudia von Alemann, enkele maanden voor de gebeurtenissen van mei 68, de opmaat vast van de culturele revolutie. Yoko Ono, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Armand Gatti, Harun Farocki, Holger Meins, Shirley Clarke, Stephen Dwoskin en Jacques Ledoux behoren tot de hoofdrolspelers van deze fascinerende collectieve ervaring.
De vertoning wordt gevolgd door een debat en Q&A tussen Claudia von Alemann en Xavier Gárcia Bardón, een in Brussel gevestigde curator, onderzoeker en schrijver. Hij deed uitgebreid onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van het filmfestival EXPRMNTL in Knokke-le-Zoute, waaraan hij zijn doctoraat in filmstudies aan de Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle heeft gewijd, onder leiding van Nicole Brenez.

EN Cavia is beyond excited to welcome German auteur, Claudia von Alemann, to our cinema for this exceptional weekend in April, showing two of her films from a lifelong oeuvre dedicated to political cinema in all its forms. In this exceptional document, shot at the end of December 1967 during the fourth edition of the EXPRMNTL festival in Knokke-le-Zoute, Claudia von Alemann records, a few months before the events of May 68, the prelude of the cultural revolution. Yoko Ono, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Armand Gatti, Harun Farocki, Holger Meins, Shirley Clarke, Stephen Dwoskin and Jacques Ledoux are among the protagonists of this fascinating collective experience.
The screening will be followed by a debate and Q&A between Claudia von Alemann and Xavier Gárcia Bardón, a curator, researcher and writer based in Brussels. He has conducted extensive research on the history of the Knokke-le-Zoute EXPRMNTL film festival, to which he has devoted his PhD in Film Studies at Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle, under the supervision of Nicole Brenez.

NL Sinds 2014 trekt onafhankelijk filmmaker Felix van Cleeff de wereld in en verbeeldt hij, als een schilder met de camera, de werkelijkheid van de mensen om zich heen. Uit talloze uren aan uniek materiaal, gefilmd met vele mensen in verschillende landen en talen, creëerde hij een visionair en eclectisch werk. River of Time is het eerste deel in een langere, poëtische filmcyclus, maar evengoed als op zichzelf staande film te bekijken. De realiteit van alledag, de kwetsbaarheid van de mens en een rijke verscheidenheid aan perspectieven zijn hier getransformeerd tot een transcendentaal geheel.
Met zijn fluïde visuele vorm en atmosferische geluidsontwerp biedt de film een overweldigende, zintuiglijke ervaring en een impressionistische, soms haast hallucinante verbeelding van onze moderne, gebroken wereld op zoek naar heling. Bovenal is River of Time een bezielde en onophoudelijke queeste naar momenten van verwondering, naar het sublieme in het aardse, en naar de mogelijkheid van een radicaal bevrijde en open vorm. Een filmisch labyrint om in te verdwalen.

EN In 2014 independent filmmaker Felix van Cleeff set out into the world, filming the lives of those around him, like a painter with the camera. From numerous hours of unique footage that he captured throughout the years with many people in various countries and languages, he created this visionary and eclectic work. River of Time is the first part in a longer poetic film cycle, but may also be viewed as a feature film in its own right. Everyday reality, the fragility of mankind and a rich variety of perspectives merge into a transcendental whole.
With its fluid visual form and atmospheric sound design the film is an overwhelming sensorial experience and an impressionistic, near hallucinatory portrayal of our broken modern world, in search of healing. River of Time is above all a spirited and continuous quest for moments of wonder, the sublime in the mundane and the possibility of a radically free and open form of filmmaking. A cinematic labyrinth that invites the viewer to wander.
With an introduction by Peter Verstraten (lecturer Film and Literary Studies; University Leiden) and a Q&A after the second screening.

Kissable Screens: FagDyke Cruising + Shinjuku Boys
NL Cavia's maandelijkse seks-positieve programma Kissable Screens is terug om ons opgewonden te maken in de lente. Kissable Screens gaat over de beeldtaal en uitvoering van erotiek door het tonen van lichamelijke differentiatie en het doorbreken van seksuele spanning in een openbare ruimte. Deze avond begint met de korte film FagDyke Cruising van Toni Karat, de regisseur van de film Narcissism die we vertoonden in de tweede editie van Kissable Screens. Daarnaast vertonen we de documentaire Shinjuku Boys, die gaat over het leven van drie transmannen die in een bar in Tokio werken. Deze twee films verbeelden seksuele ontmoetingen en bevragen onze ‘individualiteit’ en de bijbehorende esthetiek die vaak fungeert als een manier om met onze heteronormatieve samenleving om te gaan.
EN Cavia’s monthly sex-positive programme Kissable Screens is back to make us feverish in spring. Kissable Screens is about the imagery and enactment of eroticism by showing bodily differentiation and trespassing sexual tension in a public space. This evening starts with the short film FagDyke Cruising by Toni Karat, who is the director of the film Narcissism we screened in the second edition of Kissable Screens. In addition, we’ll screen the documentary film Shinjuku Boys which is about the lives of three trans men who work at a host bar in Tokyo. These two films depict sexual encounters and question our ‘individuality’ and the accompanying aesthetic that often functions as a way of coping with our heteronormative society.

NL Deze film verkent de grenzen tussen pure lust, intimiteit en vertrouwen in een anonieme seksuele ontmoeting met BDSM-dynamiek: het viert de sensatie van lesbisch cruisen in de Berlijnse leerscene en de zichtbaarheid van niet-binaire en ouder wordende lichamen. Er wordt gezegd dat FagDyke Cruising al een moderne klassieker is en er werd lang naar uitgekeken door veel mensen die de weergave van 'Butch on Butch' of 'Boi on Boi'-actie in de (queer) pornoscene missen!
EN This film explores the boundaries between pure lust, intimacy and trust in an anonymous sexual encounter with BDSM dynamics: it celebrates the thrill of lesbian cruising in the Berlin leather scene as well as the visibility of non-binary and aging bodies. FagDyke Cruising is said to be a modern classic already and was much awaited by many folks who miss the depiction of “Butch on Butch” or “Boi on Boi” action in the (queer) porn scene!

NL Deze documentaire uit 1995 volgt drie 'onabes' die werken in host bar New Marilyn in Tokio. Onabes zijn mensen die bij de geboorte het geslacht vrouw toegewezen gekregen hebben en zich bezighouden met masculiene zelfpresentatie, van wie sommigen zich identificeren als man en anderen niet. Vrouwelijke bezoekers komen naar de bar om vermaakt te worden door de charmante gastheren, en ze kunnen betalen voor intimiteit en aandacht. In openhartige gesprekken vertellen de drie hoofdpersonen over hun romantische relaties in een queerfobe samenleving, hun gender, hun seksualiteit en hun persoonlijke leven in het algemeen.
EN This documentary from 1995 follows three 'onabes' who work in a host bar called the New Marilyn in Tokyo. Onabes are people who were assigned female at birth and engage in masculine selfpresentation, some of whom identify as men and some of whom do not. Female visitors come to the bar to get entertained by attractive and personable hosts, and they can pay for intimacy and attention. In candid conversations, the three main characters talk about their romantic relationships in a queerphobic society, their gender, their sexuality, and their personal life altogether.

Na de film zal Wael Kadlo, regisseur van de film, in gesprek gaan met Palestijnse schrijver en journalist Rasha Hilwi.
SoKOON is een cultureel en artistiek collectief dat mensen uit de Arabische regio samenbrengt die nu in Nederland of andere Europese landen wonen. Ze zijn etnisch, cultureel, religieus en gender divers. Hun naam is afgeleid van "Sakan", een Arabische term voor "thuis". Dit is hun eerste evenement in Filmhuis Cavia.
EN This film presents the filmmaker’s quest to better understand the shredded state of his family, while questioning the long-lasting socio-political crisis in Syria. Cancer, family dismantlement, and urban transformations are in The Way to Home a metaphor for a global crisis. After the film, Wael Kadlo, director of the film, will be in conversation with the Palestinian writer and journalist Rasha Hilwi.
SoKOON is a cultural and artistic collective that brings together people from the Arab region who are now residents of the Netherlands or other European countries. They are ethnic, cultural, religious and gender diverse. Their name derives from “Sakan” which is an Arabic term for “home”. This is their first event in Filmhuis Cavia.
