Outdoor Cinema
Cavia’s MOONS carries, as always, many stories, waves and spells of cinema in the summer nights. Fast or slow, straight or crooked, headlong or cradled, chuckling or charming, we move and encounter in a journey full of surprises, with perfect films for a soft summer night at Cavia's courtyard.
Each night is hosted by a long lasting companion of Cavia:
VERA Zienema, an alternative community-run cinema located in Groningen, opens the first day with a silent film and live music composed by Julia Bekker & Hugo Heinen.
On Friday, Jeffrey's Underground Cinemas will curate the night! As you probably know, Jeffrey has been programming movies at different alternative venues in Amsterdam for 18 years, offering a wide range of forgotten cinematic gems. For this night he has chosen one of the most innovative films of the 1960s.
Again BUT Film Festival will visit Cavia to share their archive. BUT is based in Breda for B-movie, Underground and Trash films. They bring a 16mm film to be shown to the public once again on the big screen. Come by and enjoy a forgotten analogue cult film on Saturday!
On the last MOONS night, Kaboom Animation Festival, a progressive and inclusive festival in the Netherlands that celebrates animation in all its glorious shapes and sizes, shows 8 short animated films from various countries.

VERA Zienema: A Page of Madness + musical accompaniment by Julia & Hugo

NL Muzikale begeleiding tijdens de film. Tussen 1910-1930 was dit de normaalste gang van zaken in Nederland. Maar met de komst van de geluidsfilm, de zogeheten ‘talkies’, is dit ongebruikelijk geworden. Ergens wel jammer, want het zorgt namelijk voor een compleet andere bioscoopervaring dan we nu gewend zijn; de muzikant maakt namelijk echt de film tot iets eigens.
Laten we daarom deze oude bioscooptraditie in ere houden! Julia Bekker (Santa Fé, Vanity Box) en Hugo Heinen (Atoomclub, Vanity Box) gaan hun eigen compositie naar Cavia brengen. Samen begeleiden ze de experimentele horrorfilm A Page Of Madness. De film is het product van een avant-garde groep kunstenaars in Japan, bekend als de Shinkankakuha. Met deze film wilden ze niet alleen kritiek leveren op de institutionalisering van geesteszieken, maar wilden ze zich ook verzetten tegen de destijdse overrepresentatie van realistische cinema. Het resultaat is een surrealistische nachtmerrie uit het tijdperk van de stille film.
EN Musical accompaniment at the cinemas. Around 1910-1930 this was a normal course of events in the Netherlands. But with the advent of sound film, the so-called ’talkies’, this has become rather unusual. In a way this is a pity, because it provides the viewer a completely different cinema experience than what we are used to nowadays; the musician really turns the film into something of their own.
So let’s keep this old cinema tradition alive! Julia Bekker (Santa Fé, Vanity Box) and Hugo Heinen (Atoomclub, Vanity Box) will bring their own compositions to Cavia. Together they will accompany the experimental horror film A Page Of Madness. The film is the product of an avant-garde group of artists in Japan known as the Shinkankakuha. With this film they not only wanted to criticize the institutionalization of the mentally ill, but also wanted to oppose the over-representation of realistic cinema at the time. The result is a surreal nightmare from the silent film era.

Jeffrey's Underground Cinema: Happy End

EN This is one hell of a crazy film, totally unique in the history of cinema.... showing how creative and inventive Czech filmmakers were already back in the 60s. This is the first film I know of that is totally in reverse – in fact it's actually the only one I know... though Memento and Irreversible come close. But this film is radically different because it really does run 100% in reverse – not just the storyline but all the activities are in reverse... dialogue is mouthed backwards, everything moves backwards, people walk backwards, eat backwards. And what makes it such a stroke of genius is how the narrative is constructed – if you played it forward, it would be a typically serious dramatic tragedy, but since it's in reverse it magically becomes its opposite – an innovative black comedy!
This film is also a great exercise in understanding how we view cinema. It shows how thinking forward is actually just a bad habit, and the director of the film really does play with your normalized automatic assumptions of watching movies. This film was never shown to so-called "arthouse" crowds, but to the normal mainstream audience in Czechoslovakia. It just goes to show how open and intelligent the mainstream was back then. Absolutely insane and wonderful. This will be an outrageously rare screening.

NL Voor Moons of Cavia vertoont BUT op 16mm-film de komische thrillerfilm Hollywood Boulevard uit 1976. Een jonge vrouw arriveert in Hollywood om haar geluk als actrice te beproeven. Een incompetente agent koppelt haar aan een productiebedrijf dat gespecialiseerd is in goedkope B-filmbeurzen, geplaagd door vreemde dodelijke ongelukken.
EN For Moons of Cavia, BUT is showing the comedy thriller flick Hollywood Boulevard from 1976 on 16mm film. A young woman arrives in Hollywood to try her luck as an actress. An incompetent agent hooks her up with a production company which specializes in low budget B-movie fair, plagued by strange deadly accidents.

Waag je aan een dosis body-horror met viltpoppen met dit verhaal over twee moerasvrouwen, een Siamese tweeling verenigd door een been. Een van hen heeft 's nachts angstaanjagende nachtmerries waarin ze het vlees van haar zus haar eigen lichaam ziet bedekken. Met echo's van Cronenberg en Julia Ducournau is Skinned een intense stop-motionfilm over een scheve relatie die de grenzen tussen de ander en het zelf diep aantast.

Encounter the right amount of creepy and disturbing with this tale of two swamp women, Siamese twins by one leg. At night the Flayed has terrifying nightmares in which she sees her sister’s flesh covering her own body. With echoes of Cronenberg and Julia Ducournau, Skinned is a powerful stop-motion film about an abusive relationship that deeply affects the boundaries between the other and the self.
Backflip

NL Oefening baart kunst. Maar geldt dat ook voor een avatar? Nikita Diakur wil een backflip leren, maar echt veilig is dat niet, dus laat hij het over aan zijn avatar. Fake Nikita oefent met 6-core processor en doet – met behulp van Machine Learning – duizenden pogingen om een backflip tot een goed einde te brengen. Deze hilarisch maar veelzeggende experimentele film mengt eeuwenoude slapstickroutines met moderne technologie.
EN Practice makes perfect. Does that also apply for an avatar? Nikita Diakur wants to learn a backflip, but that’s not exactly safe. You can break your neck, or land on your head, or hurt your wrists. So, he let his avatar learn the trick. Practicing on a 6-core processor, Fake Nikita makes thousands of attempts to do a backflip with the help of Machine Learning. Highly entertaining and equally hilarious, this experimental film mixes age-old slapstick routines with modern tech.

NL Ergens tussen de schilderijen van Egon Schiele en de unheimliche sfeer van David Cronenberg ligt deze mysterieuze studentenfilm. Beginnend in een klaslokaal met een verliefd meisje, daalt de film al snel af in een beschimmeld, harig en droomachtig experiment. Wanneer de ietwat knullige gevoelens voor een crush te lang worden volgehouden, transformeren ze in... een schimmel?
EN Somewhere between the paintings of Egon Schiele and the eeriness of David Cronenberg lies this mysterious student film. Starting in a science class with a girl who has a crush, the film rapidly descends into a moldy, furry, wet dream-like experiment. When the fumbly feelings of a crush are held out for too long, they turn ugly – and furry.

NL Mathieu gaat gebukt onder heel wat zwaarmoedige vragen. Hij geeft toe aan zijn verdriet; de regen wordt tranen en zijn tranen worden regen. Hij wordt één met zijn verdriet. Deze prachtige symbiose van muziek en beeld is een videoclip voor een nummer van de Franse singer-songwriter Mathieu Boogaerts. Bianca Scali maakte de film met het fotografische proces cyanotopie waardoor alles een heerlijk analoge textuur krijgt.
EN Mathieu is weighed down by many questions which put him in a heavy state. But as he gives in to his sadness, the rain becomes tears and his tears become rain. He becomes one with his sadness. It’s his time to dance, and the tears accompany him. This beautiful symbiosis of music and visuals is a music video for a song by French singer-songwriter Mathieu Boogaerts. It was achieved through the cyanotype photographic printing process, giving the short film very soft textures and a wonderful analog look and feel.
Freedom Swimmer

NL Freedom Swimmer documenteert een massamigratieverhaal uit de twintigste eeuw dat in de westerse wereld nog altijd vrij onbekend is. Regisseur Olivia Martin McGuire trekt een parallel tussen de reis van een grootvader uit China – die in de seventies naar Hongkong zwom – en de strijd van zijn kleindochter, die vecht voor de vrijheid in hedendaags Hongkong. Een actuele en beklijvende film over de zoektocht naar een beter leven.
EN Exploring the effect of past trauma, Freedom Swimmer documents a mass migration story from the 20th century, which is relatively untold in the Western world. Director Olivia Martin McGuire parallels a grandfather’s journey to safety from China (swimming to Hong Kong in the 70s) with his granddaughter’s fight for freedom in Hong Kong today. A timely, captivating story of the search for a better life.
Questbound: Forbidden Ventures of the Undead Soul

NL Niets kan de koning nog opwinden. Tot er een nobele ridder langskomt... Maar is de ondode koning aan het flirten? Garrano

NL Geïnspireerd door de bosbranden in Portugal in 2018 en de mythische veerkracht van het Garrano-paard maakten Vasco Sá en David Doutel samen hun vierde kortfilm. Garrano is het onverbiddelijke en sfeerrijke verhaal van het verlies van onschuld van de jonge Joel. In iconografische, schilderlijke animatie wordt een Garrano-paard gedwongen tot het trekken van een zware last onder een brandende zon, terwijl Joel een man ontdekt die op het punt staat een bos in lichterlaaie te zetten. Een intens portret van een keerpunt dat zich afspeelt op een majestueuze plek die rijp is voor tragedie.
EN Inspired by the forest fires in Portugal in 2018 and the resilience of the Garrano horse, Vasco Sá and David Doutel made their fourth short film together. Garrano is the inexorable and moody story of the loss of innocence of a young boy. In iconographic painterly animation a Garrano horse is forced to pull a heavy load under a blazing sun while the young boy discovers a man who is about to set a forest on fire. An intense and disheartening tale set in a majestic place where tragedy strikes.
Goodbye Jérôme!

NL Goodbye Jérôme! doet wat denken aan het fantastische, door de Beatles geïnspireerde Yellow Submarine en zit vol bizarre, onorthodoxe personages. In het paradijs gaat Jérôme op zoek naar zijn vrouw Maryline. Tijdens zijn zoektocht zakt hij steeds verder weg in een surrealistische wereld waarin niemand hem lijkt te kunnen helpen.
EN Reminiscent of the whimsical Beatles-inspired Yellow Submarine and filled with bizarre, unorthodox characters, Goodbye Jérôme! traces a trip through paradise. Jérôme sets out to find his wife Maryline. In the course of his search, he sinks into a surreal and colourful world in which no one seems able to help him.
